We are taking this show on the road and opening our second annual Pop-Up Shop in Emporia, Kansas! We operate this shop to serve the flood of riders that pour into Emporia for the well renowned Dirty Kanza 200-- the world's premiere endurance gravel road race. After the amazing time we had in Gravel City, USA last year, we're absolutely thrilled to bring a little bit of Sunflower back to Emporia.
We'll be located in the Dirty Kanza Expo area at the intersection of 8th and Commercial Street. Come see us for your last minute service and equipment needs and to cross any remaining items off of your "must haves" list. We'll also have some great brand new swag and limited edition gear made just for the pop-up shop!
Thursday, June 2: 12pm-8pm
Friday, June 3: 10-8pm
Saturday, June 4th: 5am- all day
We're excited to be joined by professional athletes Rebecca Rusch and Ted King to spend an afternoon riding bikes and an evening telling stories. Rebecca is the undisputed Queen of Pain, a seven time world champion, 3 time DK200 winner and Ted has had a storied career in the ProTour peloton, riding on the biggest cycling stages in the world including the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.
There will be a group gravel ride departing from Sunflower at 3pm that will cover about 20 miles of northeast Kansas gravel at a friendly pace. That evening we'll reconvene at Sunflower at 7pm for an evening chat with Rebecca, Ted and Dan Hughes.
This event is free and open to all. You can get more details as the event draws closer by RSVPing on Facebook.
There are many factors to consider if you wish to complete the Kanza. Training, nutrition, equipment, navigation and strategy all play a crucial role. Dan Hughes (4-time King of the Kanza) will be presenting knowledge that will help you in your quest to crush the Kanza! Following the presentation there will be a Q&A session, so don't be shy. This event will be geared toward riders of all levels, and the info will be beneficial for all Kanza participants, no matter their event distance.
Information and helpful tips for support/pit crew members will be covered at the Dirty Kanza Clinic #2 on March 24th. This clinic will be lead by the guru of gravel wrenching, Collin Earhart. Collin has pit crewed for a combined 7 DK200 victories between Rebecca Rusch and Dan Hughes. He'll share helpful insights and pro-tips on taking the very best care of your DK rider.
Yeah, you read that right! 2016 is your year to get FAT!
Right now you can save big on Specialized fat bikes-- up to $600 off! Snow, sand, or just whatever, these beasts can roll over it. There is nothing quite like riding a 3 or 4 inch tire, and there is very little it can't do. Folks around here use them for snow, mountain biking, gravel... you can even take them on the sand bars on the Kansas River! If you haven't had a chance to ride one yet, come see us. We can get you out and rolling to see what all the fuss is about. In the meantime, here's our own Charlie Backus speaking to some of the lesser known fat bike facts.
Here's to a new year, fresh starts, and ton of bike riding! If you're interesting in keeping track of your miles this year, join us on Strava! There is no better resource for logging your miles, finding new routes, and new riding friends. Best of all, it's free. You can join the Sunflower Outdoor and Bike Shop Strava Club to receive info about shop rides and events, and even some special prizes along the way! In the meantime, here we are on some of our favorite Kansas gravel roads...
You spoke and we listened. We are stoked to announce that Salsa Cycles will be joining our lineup of bikes! Salsa is a brand that has been championing the concept of "adventure by bike" for years, and their line-up of bikes supports that. Check'em out here.
Salsa's ethos of exploration, adventure, getting dirty and having a good damn time doing it fits perfectly with what we do here, and we're really excited to be teamed up with them.
